E911 for Business VoIP: What Every Office Should Know
Every VoIP phone system has to be able to reach emergency services, and the responders need to know where the call is coming from. This guide explains what E911 means for a business phone system, what the FCC says about multi-line systems, and how TX3 bills for it. It is general information, not legal advice.
What E911 Means for a VoIP Phone
With a traditional phone line, the address is tied to the line. A VoIP number can be used from anywhere, so an address has to be registered for the number so a 911 call can be routed and dispatchers can see where help is needed.
A registered address
Each number used to call 911 needs an address on file that matches where the phone is actually used.
Moves and remote work
If a phone moves or someone works from home, the address needs to be updated.
Test and train
Make sure staff know how to dial 911 and what to say, and that someone owns keeping addresses current.
What the FCC Says About Multi-Line Phone Systems
The FCC publishes rules for multi-line telephone systems. Kari's Law requires systems to let a caller dial 911 directly without a prefix, and to notify a designated contact when a 911 call is made. RAY BAUM'S Act requires a dispatchable location to be sent with 911 calls. Read the details on the FCC multi-line telephone system page and ask your own advisor how they apply to your business.
How TX3 Bills for E911
E911 is $1.95 per month per primary or location DID. It is separate from the monthly platform fee (Starter $50, Pro $100, Enterprise $150) and the flat $0.03 per minute usage charge.
Have more than one location? Each location number needs its own address, so tell us about every site when you contact us. See the pricing page for all plan details, or read about our hosted PBX system.
